About your appointments


Compass Counselling Service is a non-profit-making registered charity. We do not offer free counselling but we do try to ensure that no-one in need of our service is excluded for financial reasons.

If you are in receipt of means-tested benefits or are on a low income we are able to offer a reduced cost service to a limited number of clients (see full details below).


Your first consultation and the cost


Initially you will meet one of our counsellors for a consultation lasting up to an hour and a half when you will be able to talk about your situation. Our administrator will aim to offer you this appointment within 2 weeks. The contribution required towards the cost of this consultation is currently 45 which is payable via credit/debit card over the phone at the time the appointment is made.

During this appointment you can discuss with the counsellor both types of counselling offered, individual or group. If the counsellor considers that Compass is not the best service for you, then he/she will try to suggest other agencies which may be more suited to your particular needs.


Subsequent appointments and the cost


1. Individual Counselling

If you decide to continue with individual counselling on a 1-1 basis this will normally be arranged with another counsellor who will be available to you on a weekly basis at the same time each week. Each weekly counselling session will last for 50 minutes.

The cost of each weekly counselling session at Compass is 45 and we do ask you to contribute this full amount if you can. If you are unable to meet this cost, we ask you to contribute as much as you can reasonably manage.

If you are in receipt of means-tested benefits or are on a low income, we are able to offer a limited number of reduced cost places. Under this scheme, your contribution towards each session, including the initial consultation, is reduced to 15.

As a non-profit making charity, the minimum contribution that we can afford to accept towards the cost of counselling sessions is kept under constant review.

Contributions towards counselling costs are reviewed with your counsellor every six months.

If you cancel or fail to attend your booked session, we still require you to make your contribution. This is because your counselling session is reserved for you each week and cannot be offered to anyone else.


2. Group Counselling

The group may be best for you if:
  • You find it difficult to relate to or sustain relationships with other people
  • You feel lonely, anxious or isolated
  • You lack confidence communicating with other people
  • You have difficulty expressing or discussing feelings with other people

Many people find that the therapy group is a safe place to explore these issues and see if they can improve their connections.

If you are interested in the group, or the counsellor during your initial consultation thinks that the group may be more suited to your needs, we will arrange an exploratory meeting for you with the group counsellor which will be free of charge. During this meeting you and the counsellor will discuss your situation and whether it would be of more benefit for you to join the group or undergo individual counselling, and answer any questions you may have.

The group meets every Thursday for 1.5 hours between 5-6.30pm and costs 20 per session. Unfortunately we cannot offer any reduced rates for the group.

The Compass telephone line is manned Monday 10-4pm and Tuesday-Friday 9-1pm. Outside of these times, please be prepared to leave a contact number which you are happy for us to use and some convenient times when we can call you back. We will return your call the next morning, excluding weekends.




Disability Access


All our counselling rooms are on the first floor of Compass House. If you are unable to climb stairs please inform our administrator and we will arrange for your counselling to be offered at another suitable venue.
